The Best Way to Keep Track of Meetings
How should you keep track of meetings? Have you ever wanted to run away from a meeting? I worked for one of the top five companies in the US and they seemed to hold meetings to plan meetings. It absolutely drove me around the bend! I would try and multi-task like all the other participants and secretly hoped they would not call on me for any information. In the long run, I did not get any value out of these meetings and my work was being ignored. I had to keep track of the meetings and place action items in my calendar so I would remember what the heck it was they wanted. In simple terms, my attitude absolutely stunk! When it was my turn to run the meeting, I decided to make changes. I planned what we should discuss and not just get updates from everyone. The meeting changed from keeping us up-to-date to one with meaning and relevant issues. Once this happened, there was more of a necessity to record the minutes and track the meeting progress. Meetings are a crucial part of running a company and winning clients. Client meetings should run smoothly and not be time wasters. You need to get to the point and move on. Keeping track of meetings and agendas only required the use of tables in a word processing program, or the use of an excel spreadsheet. This allowed the use of check marks to identify those action items that were completed. A list of outstanding issues yet to be resolved was easy to spot and did not require retyping everything. Tracking action items for customers should be done in the same simple manner. Customers expect to have their items taken care of ASAP. If you do not take the time to record the information, it is not likely you will remember what it is they wanted. The aim of this process is to service the customer and to keep you on track. Milestones, action items, and other events will likely keep you busy. Do not fall down on the job and forget what it is you were supposed to do. It used to be that only the largest multi-nationals needed a Compliance Officer. Today most practices, regardless of size, would be wise to charge someone within their organisation with the responsibility of keeping abreast and managing the compliance process.Take as an example European employment law that has been introduced over the last few years that has changed the face of European businesses. Small businesses in particular are finding that a casual and informal approach to employment issues can now result in statutory fines that have no bearing on the financial health of the individual company and could, without as much as a by your leave, directly result in the demise of a company.Small to medium businesses do not often have the luxury of employing a full time Compliance Officer and although larger organisations can afford a dedicated person they are finding that with compliance issues mushrooming the Compliance Officer now has a team, a department and if not already, how long before compliance becomes a division? Senior managers are not averse to ignoring the internal memos they receive advising them of their responsibilities. Compliance Officers need to deliver their messages up and down the corporate food chain and record that their advice and directives have been received and more importantly understood.The Compliance Officer has to avoid becoming the company scapegoat. This won't happen by itself, a sales team that has a long history of success though a relaxed attitude to selling is not going to willingly adopt new, and what they will see as restrictive, practices without a fight. This is a story about a man and three dogs.I walk a lot - usually for about half to three-quarters of an hour most mornings. I see a guy with two dogs quite a lot. He is 'nippy' as my co-walker tells me, so I have been a bit careful of him, but I always try to stroke him too. Whilst I have always been cautious of dogs, I have always tried my best to make friends with them, wherever I have gone (and no, I don't have a dog, and yes, I probably would like one!)My friend has now gained a third dog - another black labrador; a bit younger than the other two. So as I'm walking down the road this morning, I see all four of them coming down the road towards me. I'm not sure which black labrador is which, so I try to pick out the 'nippy' one (he sometimes nips you, to clarify!).One of the black labradors seems to be 'smiling', the other not, if you get my drift. I guess right, say my 'hellos' safely, we pass pleasantries and I walk on. As I go on, I hear the man say to the nippy labrador, 'I've no biscuits left', as he is pestered.I'm a little sad for the dog. His master doesn't know why he is temperamental, but he is. The DNA of Motivation
It really is about motivation. After all, what impels someone to climb a mountain, or go to college, or save for a car, or learn a new language or anything of a thousand things? What is it that moves someone to action from a position of comfortable stasis? The answer is motivation. Motivation is the process of stimulating you to action. It takes a need, desire or some other impulse and incites a response. Motivation is the high-octane fuel of success and, as such, it's vital that individuals and teams capitalize on its power. Often motivation seems to occur spontaneously -- the result of apparently random events. But random motivation isn't the stuff of greatness - to say the least of profitability, innovation and success. It's imperative that team makers and leaders cultivate and nurture motivation throughout the life of a project. Fortunately, motivation is relatively easy to create. In fact, it can be reduced to a formula: M = (D+ A)U. That is, motivation equals dissonance plus accountability, multiplied by urgency. This is the DNA of motivation. It's the essence of what will fire individual imagination and resiliently drive action. Contained within this simple formula are the seeds of phenomenal success.

The Three-Dimensional Communication System
Human communication is always three-dimensional. No spoken or written message is ever just words or rational thoughts. Every interchange between you and another person has and takes place at the following three intimately related levels, or dimensions, of being: emotional, physical, and rational. Any attempt to communicate will succeed if all of these dimensions are adhered to. Knowledge of this three-dimensional nature is the foundation of training. You can't get much closer to real understanding without these realizations.
